The National ICT Company of Trinidad and Tobago (iGovTT) was established to spearhead the modernisation of public services through innovative ICT solutions.

The journey to its formation was marked by a series of significant milestones in the realm of telecommunications and information technology governance, beginning in 1989.

Over the years, dedicated units and secretariats were formed, ministries were created and merged, and comprehensive ICT strategies were developed and implemented.

By 2009, these efforts culminated in the creation of iGovTT, a state-owned entity dedicated to driving ICT excellence and improving public service delivery for the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago. Our history reflects the government’s unwavering commitment to leveraging technology for national development.

1989 – 1998

Office of the Prime Minister charged with primary responsibility for Telecommunications.

1998 – 1999

Telecommunications development shifted to the Ministry of Information, Communications, Training and Distance Learning.

1999 – 2000

The creation of the ICT Policy, Planning and Research Unit at the Office of the Prime Minister.

2000 – 2002

Ministry of Communication and Information Technology created under Minister Ralph Maraj and an e-Government Unit established. e-Commerce Secretariat established at the Ministry of Trade.

2002

Ministry of Communication and Information Technology merged with the Ministry of Human Development to form the Ministry of Science, Technology and Tertiary Education (STTE). Telecommunication Policy Unit reassigned from the Ministry of STTE to the Ministry of Public Administration and Information in October. Founding of the ICT Planning Secretariat at the Ministry of Public Administration and Information. Work begins on the National ICT Strategy, fastforward.

2003

Merging of the e-Government Unit, the e-Commerce Secretariat, ICT Policy, Planning and Research Unit and Telecommunication Policy Unit initiated fastforward finalized in December.

2004

Cabinet approves the creation of the Information Communication Technology Division and it is formally launched in September.

2008

ICT Division merges with the National Information Systems Centre (NISC) to form the National ICT Centre (NICTC) in March.

2009

Cabinet approves the transition of the NICTC to the state-owned company iGovTT in May.
